13 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MERDEKA

Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman in 1957
August 31 is Hari Merdeka or Malaysia’s Independence Day. Here’s a brief look at Merdeka Day celebrations over the last 59 years and other events that have shaped the nation.
1. Malaysia gained her independence from Great Britain in 1957. Over 20,000 people gathered in Merdeka Square to mark the occasion, including the Duke of Gloucester, the King and Queen of Thailand and the Prime Minister of India. The first prime minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, chanted some of the most iconic words in Malaysian history, “Merdeka, Merdeka, Merdeka”.
2. From 1957 onwards, Merdeka celebrations have been held every year in all its grandeur. Dignitaries wear traditional uniforms and costumes, fighter jets fly overhead in a blaze of smoke and military personnel and Kadazan tribal people march through the streets.
3. Inaugural celebrations featured dancing formations that depicted the emblem of the ruling party, Barisan Nasional — or the National Front Coalition Party. Barisan Nasional has ruled Malaysia since 1957, making it one of the longest ruling, democratically installed governments in the world.
4. Up until September 16, 1963, Malaysia was still known as the Federation of Malaya. Two years after Singapore left the federation in 1961, the Bornean states of Sabah and Sarawak merged with Peninsula Malaya to form the new Malaysia.
5. Merdeka Day celebrations in 1963 were nothing short of extravagant with traditional dancers from East Malaysia appearing for the first time in full ceremonial regalia, armed with spears and other tribal items.
6. Malaysia Day, not to be confused with Merdeka Day, is held every September 16 to mark the formation of Malaysia.
7. In 1967, Merdeka celebrations saw perhaps the biggest crowd in Malaysian history. An estimated 50,000 people attended the ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of Malaysia’s independence. Thousands of law enforcement and military personnel marched through Merdeka Square.

8. Merdeka Football Festival has run concurrently with Merdeka celebrations from 1957. The festival is the oldest football event in Asia and has seen teams from all over the world compete for the prestigious trophy. Hong Kong were the inaugural winners in 1957.
9. Malacca City hosted the first Merdeka celebration outside of Stadium Merdeka and Dataran Merdeka in 1985. The decision was the brainchild of Malaysia’s “Father of Development” Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad. The Malacca Club was turned into a Merdeka memorial called the Merdeka Declaration Memorial to archive all past and future Merdeka celebrations.
10. In the same year, one of Malaysia’s most iconic acts, the Alleycats, released their chart-topping album Suara Kekasih. Founded in 1978, the Alleycats went on to have a profound impact on Malaysian people and the Malaysian music industry.

11. Following 1963, there was a push for Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines to form a confederation called Maphilindo. However, there were too many controversies and disputes over territory with then Indonesian president Sukarno putting an end to discussions.
12. Shortly after, Indonesia provided Malaysia with the greatest threat to her independence. They declared war on the Kalimantan-East Malaysia border, laying claims to territories north of Kalimantan. Indonesia only came to officially acknowledge the formation of Malaysia three years later in 1966.
13. Malaysia and her states have been ruled by many invaders over the years from Srivijayan Buddhists and Majapahit Hindus to Portuguese, Dutch and British settlers as well as the Japanese in World War II. Many of these cultures are still present in current day Merdeka celebrations.

MALAYSIA AND MARDEKA ARE FROM MALAYSIA

THE STORY OF THE NAMES MALAYSIA AND MARDEKA!

 "Merdeka, merdeka, merdeka!"

Tun Mardeka Victoria Zaman Riera, 13, stands proud with Malaysians from all walks of life to celebrate the country's Independence Day at Dataran Merdeka.

Her name was inspired by the very same shout of victory, 57 years ago, at the same venue that holds the ultimate history of Malaysia.

In fact, Mardeka got her name when her mother, Victoria Margarita, a Venezuelan who saw a documentary of Malaysia's first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman proclaiming Independence at the National Museum.

Her husband Tun Kamalul Zaman, IT consultant from Perak said his wife was pregnant at the time when she first heard the proclaimation.

"My wife was thinking about naming the baby Libertad which means freedom in Spanish. She asked me the meaning of Merdeka and I told her it meant freedom. So we decided to name our child, Mardeka." said Kamalul who met and married Victoria when he was working in South America.
However his love for the country made him decide to name their second child, Tun Malaysia Venecia.

Although she admits to being teased in school especially when she was younger, Malaysia, 17, does not mind it one bit as she began to appreciate the uniqueness of her name. She holds a special name in the hearts of all Malaysian.

"At first when I tell people my name they felt it was strange as they have never met someone with such name. I was teased a lot In kindergarten and primary school. Whenever I passed by, the other students would shout out 'Malaysia Boleh!'. But it doesn't bother me now. I'm happy with the name given to me.

"In fact, I feel patriotic and passionate about the country that I am named after," Malaysia said.
Malaysia and Mardeka are both proud of their names and what it represents.

The name Malaysia was also inspired by her mother who saw a beautiful poster of Malaysia featuring the Blue Mosque while she was pregnant. She then decided to name her daughter after the country.

Malaysia's middle name, Venecia also means Little Venezuela, her mother's birth country.

Like Malaysia, Mardeka was often teased in school because of her name but it did not bother her much.

"When people ask me my name, I tell them it's Mardeka. I'm really proud of this name because it means independence. I can do anything I want," said Mardeka who loves singing.

"Malaysia had long been conquered by other countries. We have to appreciate what we have since gaining indepencence. It has changed Malaysia a lot and we are now free," she added.

As a family tradition of naming the children with names beginning with the letters "Ma" the third in the family, Mayday Esmeralda, 15, was named after May-Day, a book about the Cold War.

Only the eldest in the family, Maria Cristina, 24, who was named after her grandmother, is the only one among four siblings with a common name.

This Malaysian-Venezuelan mixed family looks forward to the music and colourful parade every year during Merdeka Day. They also celebrate Venezuela's Independence Day every July 5.

Tun Kamalul, who also speaks fluent Spanish, has always instilled a sense of patriotism among his children by teaching them to be proud of who they are, reminding them of their roots.

"We must be independent, sovereign and proud people. We have to be proud of who we are. Let the whole world know who we are. There was once when nobody ever heard about Malaysia but now people are saying 'Wow, Malaysia is very impressive!' and that is something we all should be proud of," he said.

Interestingly, this partiotic family who are also ardent fans of the Perak football team, are the 18th direct descendants of Megat Terawis, the Chieftain of the Perak Sultanate.

Malaysia, who also pratices Silat Gayung Fatani together with her sister Mardeka, aspires to be a doctor someday.

"At first I wanted to be a doctor when I grow up, but in school my teacher said if we are good in Geopraphy and Bahasa Malaysia we can be an ambassador. So I thought after a few years of being a doctor, I would like to then be an ambassador for the country," said Malaysia who speaks fluent English, Bahasa Malaysia and Spanish.

"If I can go to other countries and speak their language well, I can help improve Malaysia’s image further in the eyes of the world," she added.

INDEPENDENCE DAY 2017

MERDEKA!!!!!!

“Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!” These iconic words were shouted by the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia (back then known as Malaya) on August 31, 1957. Dubbed as the country’s Father of Independence, this prominent figure ended a centuries’ long fight for the country’s independence from the British, and on that day, declared Malaya as an independent nation. ‘Merdeka’ means ‘independent’ and while Malaysia has been free from colonization for more than 50 years ago, the Merdeka celebration is still a glorious annual event with different themes and programmes held during the auspicious month.

This year we Malaysians proudly celebrate our 60th merdeka.I feel blessed to be born in such a divine country. Here are some information on our 60th merdeka : -

Meaning of JALUR GEMILANG...

The flag of Malaysia, also known as the (MalayJalur Gemilang (Stripes of Glory)),[1] is composed of a field of 14 alternating red and white stripes along the fly and a blue canton bearing a crescent and a 14-point star known as the Bintang Persekutuan (Federal Star). The 14 stripes, of equal width, represent the equal status in the federation of the 13 member states and the federal government, while the 14 points of the star represent the unity between these entities.[2] The crescent represents Islam, the country's official religion; the blue canton symbolises the unity of the Malaysian people; the yellow of the star and crescent is the royal colour of the Malay rulers.[3]
In blazon, the Malaysian flag is described as: "A banner Gules, seven bars Argent; the canton Azure charged with decrescent and mullet of fourteen points Or". This means "a red flag with seven horizontal white stripes; the upper-left (hoist) quarter is blue with a yellow waning crescent (i.e. horns pointing to sinister) and a yellow 14-pointed star".

THE WORD MERDEKA###

Merdeka
Merdeka is a word in the Indonesian and Malay language meaning independentor free. It is derived from the Sanskritmaharddhika (महर्द्धिक) meaning "rich, prosperous and powerful". In the Malay archipelago, this term had acquired the meaning of a freed slave.
The term Mardijker is a Dutch corruption of the Portuguese version of the original Sanskrit words and was used to designate former Portuguese and Dutch slaves from India in the East Indies, known as Mardijkers, whence the Malay meaning of "free(dom)" is derived. Mardijker are the former Catholic slaves brought from India and the East Indies that were liberated by the Dutch if they abandoned Catholicism and embraced the Dutch Reformed Church.[1]
The term was significant during the anticolonialist and pro-independence movements of the colonies of IndonesiaMalaya, and Singapore, in the history of Indonesiahistory of Malaysia, and in the history of Singapore. It became a battle-cry for those demanding independence from the colonial administrations of the Netherlands and United Kingdom. In the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, the Moro people belonging to major ethno-linguistic groups of Meranaw, Maguindanaw and Iranun, use maradekain the same meaning as freedom or liberation and freedom group there is called Maradeka.
The Tagalog term maharlika has the same Sanskrit origins as the Malay merdeka and means freeman, libertos or Freedman in classical Philippine society.[2]
